What is a GTM engineer?

The person who turns a revenue team's data and judgment into systems that run every day, and makes sure the team can trust what those systems do.

Melanie Chen ·

A GTM engineer builds the machinery a go-to-market team runs on: the data pipelines, the enrichment, the routing, the outreach, and now the AI agents. The title is new. The job has existed for years under RevOps, sales ops, and growth, done by whoever on the team could write a script.

What changed is that agents made the job bigger. A GTM engineer used to connect tools. Now they are asked to build agents that research accounts, draft follow-ups, and update the CRM, and to make sure those agents can be trusted with real customers.

What a GTM engineer actually does

  • Owns the data. Gets the CRM, calendar, inbox, and call notes to agree on who each account and person is.
  • Builds the agents. Turns how the best rep preps an account or follows up on a call into something the whole team runs.
  • Decides where people check the work. Puts a person in front of anything that writes to the CRM or reaches a customer.
  • Measures what works. Watches which drafts get kept, edited, or declined, and improves the agents from that.
  • Keeps it running. Notices when a connection breaks or a source goes stale before the team finds out from a wrong answer.

GTM engineer, RevOps, sales ops

RevOps owns the process and the numbers. Sales ops keeps the tools and the territories in order. A GTM engineer builds: they are the one who can write the SQL, wire the API, and ship the agent. On small teams one person does all three.

The hard part is not building agents

Most GTM engineers can build an agent in an afternoon. The hard part comes a month later, when the agent gives two different answers to the same question and the team quietly stops using it. That is almost never the model. It is the data underneath: read live from five APIs, slightly different every time, with nothing to show where an answer came from.

So the work that matters most is less about prompts and more about data: joining sources on the right people and accounts, reading them as of one moment, and making every answer traceable to the rows behind it.

Questions

What does a GTM engineer do?

Builds and runs the systems a revenue team works from: data pipelines, enrichment, outreach, and AI agents, with checks so the team can trust what those systems produce.

Is a GTM engineer the same as RevOps?

They overlap. RevOps owns process and reporting; a GTM engineer builds the systems that carry it out. On small teams it is often the same person.

What does a GTM engineer need to know?

SQL and APIs, a working knowledge of the CRM and the sales process, and the judgment to decide where a person should check an agent's work before it acts.
